Handy Wheels

Handy Wheels is a program which aims to keep their clients safe within their homes.  Volunteers help with  bathroom safety bars, hand held shower extensions, light bulbs, house numbers, flapper valves, screen repair, and doorbell installation to name a few.

Changing a light bulb, replacing the battery in a smoke alarm, and doorbell installation  may sound like easy tasks to many, but for our clients, making even these minor fixes is a major task.  For a hard-of-hearing client, the installation of a flashing doorbell can make the difference between receiving a daily Meal on Wheels meal or missing that meal and going hungry. Donating your time to improve the sense of security for our home-bound clients is truly a valuable asset to helping clients remain independent in their homes.

Volunteers must be able to:

  • Provide their own tools and have a basic knowledge of home installations (such as wireless doorbells, hand held shower extensions, and bathroom safety bars).
  • Come to Meals on Wheels and More on the 2nd Saturday of the month to select job sheets.  You may either perform the tasks that day or you may take jobs with you and complete within the following 2 to 3 weeks.
  • Call clients to schedule appointments in order to let them know the date and time that you will be at their home.
  • Keep in contact with the Handy Wheels Coordinator to inform her/him of the status of your jobs.
  • Return your job sheets to the Meals On Wheels And More office as soon as the jobs are completed.

This is a flexible volunteer position.
