Texas Homeless Network

Texas Homeless Network (THN) and Sunrise Community Church have teamed up to pilot a volunteer project with seniors 50+ to help our most vulnerable neighbors apply for disability using a specific method aimed at people experiencing homelessness. They are seeking volunteers to complete disability applications in a homeless outreach program, using a specific method called SOAR (SSI/SSDI, Outreach, Access & Recovery).

The major differences between the traditional disability application method and the SOAR application method include a 6 page narrative detailing why someone’s disability makes them unable to work. When this is signed by an acceptable medical professional, it is deemed medical evidence. You do this through an Appointment of Representative, which means you manage their case.

This opportunity is ideal for retired attorneys, doctors or nurses, social workers, or writers who don’t mind paperwork. Must be comfortable working with marginalized populations. 20-hour training is free and guidance provided along the process.

Located in South Austin off Manchaca and Ben White. Minimum 6-month commitment requested.

THN is a statewide homeless advocacy agency and the Continuum of Care for 215 Texas counties.

Sunrise is in the Travis County Continuum of Care and offers meals, clothing, Coordinated Assessments, and medical support to people experiencing homelessness.

The aim of the pilot project is to create a system within the church to access disability benefits specifically with senior volunteers that can be replicated in smaller, more rural Texas towns.
