Training location: The site for the majority of the training will be held at the Travis County/Palm Square building located at 100 North IH-35, Austin, Texas 78701. However, one or more sessions could occur at other locations, but all of them will fall within the Travis County service area.

Job purpose: To carry out effective Coming of Age training on civic engagement and leadership skills development for the 50 and older population, as well as capacity building for nonprofit organizations.

Leadership Academy: People 50+ Leading the Way to Civic Engagement

The Leadership Academy is a 5-session workshop series designed to help people 50+ learn how to use their personal experiences and passions to inspire others to serve. Leadership Academy participants become grassroots organizers serving on the frontline to address specific community needs. Not only are participants inspiring others to serve, they are building leadership skills, and enhancing the capacity of the organizations where they volunteer through self-directed teams. The Academy will simultaneously leverage the talents, skills, and passions of people 50+, while providing support to nonprofit organizations through Make a BIG Difference Teams.

Job description: Coming of Age is seeking contract trainers to deliver one or more sessions, of a 5-session, classroom-based training, to adults who are 50+.

The training curriculum has been developed and contract trainers are not required to develop curriculum, activities, handouts, workbooks, folders, or other training collateral materials. Nor will contract trainers be required to transport training supplies, equipment, or technology.

An in-depth knowledge of leadership, nonprofit organizations, team building and/or project management is strongly desired.

The ideal candidate will possess a strong customer service orientation, attention to detail, exceptional communication skills, and first-rate interpersonal skills. Contract trainers must have an ability to work independently while meeting tight deadlines.

Contract trainers must have the time flexibility to adequately prepare for and deliver the workshop curriculum. Practice sessions are required and scheduling for the official delivery of the training sessions may vary by day and time.

Contract trainers are not required to deliver all 5-sessions of the workshop, but instead, may be assigned to one or more sessions. This is subject to area of expertise and preference.

Contract trainers will work under the guidance and supervision of Travis County and Coming of Age.

Reliable transportation is a must.

Desired skills and experience: Minimum requirements include 3 years of training experience in a direct, face-to-face learning environment and proficiency with PowerPoint presentations. Training experience should include delivery of customized curriculum to the adult learner in classroom settings. A related degree is preferred, but job experience and specific job training carry equal weight. Those with a working knowledge of volunteer management and/or issues related to the 50+ population and non-profit organizations are encouraged to apply.

Contract trainers should have experience in:

  • Delivering classroom-based instruction
  • Knowledge and/or experience in working with advocacy groups, social service providers, and/or community outreach organizations
  • Proficiency with computer equipment including PowerPoint and related technology
  • Conducting education and training sessions and public speaking presentations
  • Problem-solving and decision-making
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Effective time management skills
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with Coming of Age staff, representatives of outside agencies, other County employees, community organizations and the general public

Key duties and responsibilities:

  • Deliver one or more sessions of the Leadership Academy: People 50+ Leading the Way to Civic Engagement to adult learners to meet Coming of Age’s training needs through classroom-based instruction and delivery
  • Liaise with other Coming of Age trainers for the planning and delivery of the Leadership Academy
  • Provide support for training delivery by engaging in training room set up and break down
  • Ensure all training activities and materials meet Coming of Age policies and procedures
  • Meet with Coming of Age staff about program related and training issues
  • Participate in train-the-trainer sessions
  • Stay informed as to relevant skill and qualifications levels required by Coming of Age staff for effective performance
  • Suggest training strategy and plans to meet training needs
  • Develop, maintain, and improve knowledge base in relevant field
  • Monitor, measure, and report on training activities, performance, etc., as required
