Striking a Balance Caregiver Conference

AGE of Central Texas and the Area Agency on Aging of the Capital Area are again partnering this year for the 14th Annual “Striking a Balance” Caregiver Conference on Saturday, September 26, from 8:30 am to 2:00 pm at the Norris Conference Center, located at 2525 W. Anderson Lane in Austin.  The free seminar includes keynote presentations, breakout sessions, and community resources to support family members who are caring for a senior adult.

The largest, longest-run free caregiver conference in Central Texas, the annual event helps to ease the burdens of caring for an aging family member by providing unpaid caregivers with relevant information and vital resources.  The attendees will discover local resources, acquire skills to better manage their caregiving situation, and connect with other caregivers and local experts on aging.  The day also includes workshops on topics related to caregiving, with experts available for questions.

This year’s conference features a keynote seminar by Sara Honn Qualls, Ph.D., the Kraemer Family Professor of Aging Studies and Professor of Psychology, and Director of the Gerontology Center at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs (UCCS).  Dr. Qualls has helped develop professional geropsychology as an emerging specialization nationally.  At UCCS, she helped develop a doctoral program, a community training clinic called the Aging Center, a senior housing collaboration, and an integrated health care model for primary care, nutrition, physical activity, and mental health.  She has published several books, including Caregiver Family Therapy and Aging and Mental Health.

Registration for the “Striking a Balance” Caregiver Conference is free, and includes all presentations, breakout sessions, and lunch. Registration opens this Wednesday, August 5, and space is limited.

Free respite will also be available at the AGE of Central Texas Adult Day Health Center.  Requests for respite care must be made by calling Gailyn Trammell at (512) 600-9275 no later than Wednesday, September 16.
